When performed correctly, using appropriate equipment and screening, Colon Hydrotherapy is generally considered safe.
At Synergy Gut Care, we prioritise:
Use of approved, regulated equipment
Strict hygiene and infection control protocols
Thorough screening for contraindications
Individualised care based on your health status
However, like any intervention, it is not suitable for everyone, and screening is essential.
-
You may benefit from colon hydrotherapy if you experience:
- Constipation or sluggish bowels
- Bloating and abdominal discomfort
- Excessive gas or digestive irregularity
- Feeling heavy, inflamed, or "stuck"
- Brain fog and fatigue
- Skin concerns and inflammatory symptoms
- Stress-related digestive symptoms
- Preparing for a gut healing protocol or microbiome programme
- Looking to support your overall digestive wellbeing -
Colon hydrotherapy can be a supportive therapy for many people; however, there are circumstances where treatment is not appropriate or may require medical clearance and careful assessment.
Certain conditions, including pregnancy, active gastrointestinal disease, intestinal perforation, significant heart disease, severe anaemia, renal insufficiency, acute diverticulitis, acute Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and abdominal or rectal tumours, are contraindications to treatment.
Additional caution is required for those with recent abdominal surgery, gastrointestinal bleeding, severe haemorrhoids, uncontrolled hypertension, liver disease, neurological conditions, or unexplained acute abdominal pain.
Our priority is to ensure all care is safe, appropriate, and tailored to your individual health history and wellbeing.
If you are unsure whether colon hydrotherapy is suitable for you, please contact us prior to booking to discuss your circumstances.

A little preparation can make a big difference to your experience and help you get the most from your treatment. Preparing beforehand may support comfortable elimination, encourage healthy hydration and bowel function, reduce bloating and cramping, and help you feel more relaxed during your session.
24–48 Hours Before Your Appointment
✓ Aim to drink approximately 2 litres of filtered water each day (unless otherwise advised by your healthcare practitioner).
Choose nourishing, easy-to-digest foods such as:
• Soups and broths
• Slow-cooked proteins
• Cooked vegetablesReduce where possible:
• Alcohol
• Excessive caffeine
• Fried and highly processed foods
• Large, heavy meals
• Excessive refined sugarOn the Day of Your Appointment
- Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before your session.
- Continue sipping water throughout the day. These simple steps can help you feel comfortable, supported, and prepared for your colon hydrotherapy session.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Anything you feel comfortable in. Loose-fitting clothing is a great choice. We recommend choosing clothing that can be easily removed from the waist down, as this will be required for the duration of your treatment.
You will be fully draped with a towel at all times, ensuring your privacy, comfort, and dignity throughout the session.
-
Your comfort, dignity, and privacy are our priority.
Step 1: Consultation & Check-In
We begin by reviewing your health history, symptoms, medications, and goals to ensure treatment is appropriate and personalised to your needs.
Step 2: The Treatment
A small disposable speculum is gently inserted into the rectum. Warm, filtered water is then introduced into the colon at a controlled rate using a closed-system device. The water encourages natural bowel contractions and assists the release of waste and gas through a completely enclosed drainage system. Gentle abdominal massage may be used where appropriate.
Step 3: Throughout the Session
- You remain comfortably covered.
- Your practitioner remains present and supportive.
- The process is private, professional, and hygienic.
- Sessions generally last between 45–75 minutes depending on the appointment type. Some individuals experience temporary sensations of fullness, pressure, or mild cramping as the bowel releases, but treatment should not be painful.
-
Everyone responds differently.
Many clients report:
- Feeling lighter
- Reduced bloating
- Increased comfort and ease
- A sense of calm and relaxation
- Greater body awareness and mental claritySome individuals may temporarily experience:
✓ Mild fatigue
✓ Increased bowel activity
✓ Passing more water or gas
✓ Temporary bloating or rumbling
✓ Mild headaches or tirednessThese responses are generally short-lived and usually settle within 24–48 hours.
To support your body following treatment:
Hydrate
Continue drinking plenty of filtered water throughout the day.
Eat Gently
Choose nourishing, easy-to-digest meals such as:
• Soups and broths
• Cooked vegetables
• Slow-cooked proteins
• Light, whole-food mealsPrioritise Rest
Your digestive system has been active during treatment. Some individuals feel energised, while others benefit from slowing down and allowing the body time to rest and reset.
Avoid Where Possible for the Remainder of the Day
• Excessive alcohol
• Highly processed foods
• Very heavy meals
• Excessive caffeine -
In many cases, a series of treatments may be recommended.
This is because:
The body does not always release everything in one session
Deeper patterns may require gradual support
Consistency often leads to more sustainable outcomes
Your practitioner will guide you based on your individual presentation and goals.
-
Will it hurt?
Some people experience temporary cramping or pressure as the bowel releases, but treatment should not be painful.Colon Hydrotherapy is generally described as:
Gentle
Relieving
Occasionally uncomfortable (especially with gas or constipation)
Discomfort, if experienced, is usually temporary and managed throughout the session with practitioner support.
Will I be exposed?
No. Your privacy and dignity are maintained throughout your session. Will I be left alone?
No. Your practitioner remains available and supportive throughout treatment. Can I have a treatment during my period?
Yes, in most cases, you can still have a colonic during your period. Some women find treatment during this time supportive, particularly if they experience bloating or a feeling of heaviness, as the body is already in a natural phase of elimination.
That said, if you tend to experience cramping or discomfort, you may find it more comfortable to schedule your session in the week leading up to your cycle, when the body is often more relaxed.
Is this is a detox?
Colon Hydrotherapy supports the body’s natural elimination pathways. However, at Synergy Gut Care, we approach this carefully- focusing on:
Supporting physiology and function
Avoiding excessive or aggressive “detox” approaches
Working in alignment with your body’s capacity
This is about restoration - not force.
Do I need to adjust my diet as well?
For best results - yes.
Colon Hydrotherapy works most effectively when combined with:
Appropriate nutrition
Lifestyle adjustments
Nervous system support
This is why we offer Nutrition Consultations, to help you address the underlying drivers of your symptoms - not just the surface level.
